Len Shepard – Letter 103

Dear May,

I am working my way home by degrees.  I expected to be on the Rimutaka to sail on Tue. next but when I landed here I got put into Hosp.  Did I tell you I had a swelled face when I was on leave, well anyhow it seems it was mumps & I didn’t get properly over it.  I’ve felt pretty seedy all the time but just on the mend when they caught me & although I’ve only been a day in Hosp. I feel quite fit now & expect to be out again in a few days but I won’t catch that boat now.  Perhaps I’ll get another leave out of it & that’ll make up for a lot.  I’d like to get up there with Bill & Ern, but they will be back before I’m out of here, we might strike the same boat.

Archie came down with me from Hornchurch & I think he will sail with the Rimutaka.  All men who go into Hosp are marked B & sent home as category men.  It is pity there is another winter waiting for us over there.  I had an invite to stay in Blighty for the Summer & go home later so as to work in two Summers but the heads won’t agree to it.  I wouldn’t mind staying here till about the end of Aug as that would just land me home in nice time to get started by Xmas, but anyhow the red tape blocked me.  Well I don’t think there’s any more news, have had no N.Z. mail lately.

Love to All
Len
