With Russia’s withdrawal from the war, German forces were able to concentrate their efforts on the Western Front. The New Zealand Division, along with other troops, were thrown into the gaps the Germans had created in the British Expeditionary Forces lines. Here the New Zealand men excelled in open-country fighting and assisted in many Allied gains.
