Gallipoli evacuated

Announcement Date: 15/12/1915

After failed attacks and deteriorating conditions, the New Zealand troops were evacuated from the Anzac area between 15th – 20th December 1915.

The Gallipoli Campaign was a costly battle for both sides.  New Zealand alone suffered 8000 casualties including 2779 deaths.  British and dominion casualties numbered nearly 115,000, with an additional 27,000 French casualties.  On the other side the Ottoman’s suffered 250,000 killed or wounded defending the peninsula.
