Charlie McIntyre – Letter 10

Featherston

Dear Tom

You will find enclosed the sum of three pounds which amount I am sending on to be safe, for a day or two later, if I keep it here I will either spend or may-hap lose it so if it is home when I arrive I will know what I have.  I will in all probability be sending more after the next pay or two but it will hardly be as much as this time as all along I have been carry at least one note.  However I am keeping two pounds to carry me on to next pay & I will hardly spend that if I can manage it at all.  The fourteenths have to day received their marching orders & leave tomorrow morning.  Leaving Wellington tomorrow afternoon they will arrive in Dunedin on Friday & are to sail Sunday night or Monday.  Today they are not doing anything & are having quite a big time I saw in some of the papers send forward that Buller’s performances at Dunedin were inconsistant but that nothing was said in regard to it.  He paid rather a nice price too also Rorkes Drift.  I suppose his next mission will be the N.Z. Cup.  Also saw Buller’s name

in the same column as Rosie O Grady, Willie is evidentally conversant with the ownership of some of the good things down there.  How is Seekashore & her foal progressing I daresay he will be ready for training by now & did Chisolm come to light about any of the other horses.  I suppose things must be progressing favourably on the farm as nothing has been written to the contrary, by now the ploughing will be getting well on I suppose.  You had better keep Jack well up to the mark don’t let him stray away too much.  I am on this dining room orderly job again today so have not much to do this make the second day this week that I have not been on parade so it is little wonder if I am putting on condition as everyone tells me I am.  There is nothing to write about as I think I wrote most of it yesterday so will close this.  Hoping it reaches you in safety.  Weather fine going good.

Ever your Brother
Charlie
