Dear May,
Enclosed letter was written on the boat as we heard that a mail was to go from Marseilles but we were disappointed so I am sending it now. Since then we have travelled pretty well the length of France doing the journey in about 56 hours continuous travelling. It was very interesting & the country looks delightfully fresh after Egypt, but we had had quite enough by the time we got here. We are now at the back of the British lines & are within hearing of big guns & don’t know just how soon we will be in the trenches. At present our Coy. has not been billeted out but we are in a small camp on our own. It is very sloppy & misty here but another month should put it right. We have seen Amiens & several smaller towns that the Germans once held, also Boulogne, Calais & the English Channel but

we missed Paris, as we passed round the outskirts at night. Will try to write fuller particulars later, but we expect to be cut down to field service p.c’s shortly. Must stop now as we have to be out of town by 8. Goodbye – you’ll probably hear of our doings before this reaches you.
Love to all
Len
Lieut Downie Stewart is our platoon officer. He is a very decent chap & very popular.
