Len Shepard – Letter 84

Sunday. Ap. 6th (?)

Dear May,

We have had another lovely day & Mark & I have spent the afternoon in town, I suppose you will know what town.  This is my first visit to it & it is more like a “Gyppo” village than anything else I know of.  I will send a book of views if they will pass the censor – they are nothing flash but they flatter the place, & fortunately the smell doesn’t come out in the photo.  We managed to get a decent feed there & that makes up for a lot.  It cost us fr3.25 each for pork chop 2 eggs & chipped ‘pomme-de-terres’, with bread & coffee.  There are one or two photogrs turning out a fair amount of second rate work & we might muster up sufficient courage to make a combined raid on one of them but can promise nothing yet.  Dick Hume left for forward base a few days ago & Whistler is classed A & expects

to go shortly.  Mark is B.1. so he should be here for about a week or two yet.  Young Thompson who used to drive the baker’s cart is here but he also expects to go out next draft.  We have little definite news of the divisions doings, but it seems fairly certain that they will play a part in the present struggle.  As you won’t know whether  I am in it or not I suppose I had better cable as usual if I hear they have been doing any stunting.  I am still waiting for N.Z. mail.  Mark landed a bundle of about 25 last night so I am still hopeful.  I don’t think there is any more news & as we are going up to a sing song in the S.A. Hut now I’ll have to make this do.

With Love to All
Len
